Internships and Jobs at My Best Friend Obedience

We offer internships for dog trainers with some experience and encourage you to contact us about our program.

Typically, we train instructors for MY BEST FRIEND OBEDIENCE jobs, not for individual pursuits. We have developed an excellent new curriculum that you may want to consider enrolling in that will teach you every aspect of running a dog training business, from keeping the books and keeping the kennel, to training the owners and training the dogs!  You must have a flexible schedule.  We do most of our dog training evenings and weekends, but the office and in-kennel training typically takes place during the day, during the week, when we aren't busy with clients.  Beginning and Intermediate Dog Trainer Programs are offered. Call (818) 996-3647 (DOGS), talk to Karen Taylor,CPDT and enroll today!

The general idea is to do the following:

Learning to teach Groups … all interns, assistants and trainers are required to attend the first class of all classes and the last class where ever we are CGC testing upon request.

This is how it works (the number of times you do each level depends on how fast you “get it”):
Intern (free except for the excellent training you get that you don’t have to pay for)
Paid assistant (we thought enough of your skill to give you a check and we count on you to be there to help or find a replacement for yourself)
Co-teach with a qualified instructor (you earn a higher percentage than assistant but not 50/50 yet)
Co-teach with a qualified instructor (you teach and the instructor assists you 50/50 split)
Then you can either teach on your own with an assistant or do a split with another trainer as you wish.
Then you begin to train new interns.

Learning to teach Private

If you feel you would like to do “ride alongs” and intern with me on private sessions you may.  Call me for my schedule. I will start giving you private sessions as soon as you have all your own equipment and you have had me or Barbara join you on a number of (less if you are a quick learner) private sessions to watch you work. After that most trainers earn about half the take on a private session.

50 percent of all monies earned by mbfo goes to pay for advertising, office help and my phone time bringing in the clients (I totally rock as a salesperson – just kidding)!

I also strongly encourage you to set up some office time to learn phone skills of selling the buz, as well as how the records are kept and the accounting and marketing is done.

I often have in-kennel training dogs to be worked to help you get more hands on with practicing training dogs under supervision and we have relationships with rescues where you can work on some hands on training!

I will be recommending books to read and videos/dvds to watch and seminars to attend all along the way

Not a bad program for free eh?
